Our goal is to create awareness among the local community that we are faced with a real climate emergency, and create pressure on our elected representatives to take strong action against climate change. We believe Australia needs to take urgent steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition our economy to a low carbon future based on 100% renewable energy.
Our members are local residents from the inner-west of Sydney. We have strong links with other groups in our community including environmental organisations, local student organisations, bike groups and the local food coop. All member of Climate Action Newtown are volunteers and the group is politically unaligned.
Join us! On your own it is hard to take action against climate change, but together we can make a difference. If you live in Newtown, Redfern, Marrickville, Glebe, Leichhardt or any other part of Sydney’s inner west, email Lindsay at climate.action.newtown@gmail.com to find out more.
We meet every second Wednesday, 6:30pm in Newtown. Membership is free, email us to find out where we meet. Come along, new members are always welcome!

Australia’s Climate Action Summit 2010
Our governments are not providing real climate solutions. Whether it’s the CPRS or Copenhagen, we deserve better. This conference will provide three days worth of strategy, workshops and discussions for the grassroots movement against climate change in 2010. Join community members and guest speakers from around the country and get involved in campaigning for a safe climate future.

Say NO to new coal power in NSW
The Keneally Government is moving forward with plans for 2 new coal-fired power stations in NSW (one in Lithgow, one in the Hunter). If built, these plants will increase NSW’s greenhouse gas emissions by 15% and undermine the future for green energy jobs. New coal power will be an economic and environmental disaster for NSW.
Send Premier Keneally a No New Coal Power message today by signing the petition online.
Or download the petition and get your friends to sign it.
For more info about the campaign, click here, it’s being supported by NSW Greens, and environment and climate action groups from across NSW.
Vigil for survival – Friday 11th December, 6-7pm
On Friday 11th Dec, members of CAN and the public held vigil at Sydney’s Town Hall steps, to coincide with the middle of the Copenhagen talks and over 2000 other vigils planned across the globe that weekend as a response to a call from 350.org. We called for world leaders to actively reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to below 350 parts per million. More on the events page.
STOP PRESS At the recent Nature Conservation Council of NSW World Environment Day Conservation Awards 2009, Climate Action Newtown won the Climate Movement Award for the most inspiring climate action initiative by a climate change community group. We’re stoked to be recognised by NCC and Climate Movement for all the work we’ve been doing over the last year in the community to raise awareness about climate change.
